FOOTBALL : Ajax win Dutch Eredivisie title on Sunday

Ajax have claimed the 2011/12 Dutch Eredivisie title with a 2-1 victory at FC Twente on Sunday afternoon.

Gregory van der Wiel scored the winner 12 minutes from time to take Ajax to 70 points and effectively wrap up the league championship with two rounds remaining.

While Feyenoord are six points behind with two games to go, the Rotterdam club have an inferior goal difference that means Ajax have a 24 goal advantage over Feyenoord so even two defeats will not deny Ajax the title.

With PSV Eindhoven sitting in 3rd position, it appears that the traditional "big three" of Dutch football are starting to re-assert their place at the top after 3-4 years of suffering at the hands of FC Twente and AZ Alkmaar.

FOOTBALL : West Brom's Roy Hodgson approached to become England manager

Roy Hodgson has been approached by the England Football Association over the vacant England manager's and his club West Bromwich Albion have given the Football Association permission to talk.

Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp had been heavily linked with the job ever since Capello left the post in February, but has overseen an awful run of form with his club side Tottenham Hotspur while appearing to do nothing more than hold media briefings about the possible England job and that inaction combined with Redknapp's complete lack of international experience leave large question marks about the Spurs boss.

Instead, the FA has decided to discuss the position with Hodgson, who has previous international experience from his time in charge of Switzerland, United Arab Emirates and Finland. FA chairman David Bernstein said: "Roy is the only manager we have approached and we remain on course to make an appointment within the timescale we set out."

The four-man panel which will decide who takes over from Capello are Bernstein, FA general secretary Alex Horne, FA director of football development Sir Trevor Brooking and managing director of Club England Adrian Bevington.

Bernstein approached West Brom on Saturday and was immediately given permission to speak to Hodgson, who is likely to be appointed within days in a long-term role. Hodgson's contract with West Brom ends on 30 June.

It is expected any contract will cover the three tournaments up to and including Euro 2016, at which point he will be two months short of his 69th birthday.

FOOTBALL : Pep Guardiola steps down as Barcelona manager

Pep Guardiola will step down as the Barcelona manager at the end of this season after deciding not to renew his rolling one-year contract.

The 41-year-old, who was appointed in 2008 and has led the Catalan club to 13 trophies, will handover to current assistant Tito Vilanova. It is understood Guardiola will take a year away from football after relinquishing his duties to Vilanova.

But after a stunning reign it has been a disappointing season this year for Barca, who look set to miss out to Real Madrid in La Liga and were knocked out of the Champions League by Chelsea just 3 days ago.

"The reason is simple: four years is enough," said Guardiola. "I'm drained and I need to fill up. The demand has been very high and a manager must be strong."

HOCKEY : Washington Capitals win game 7 to eliminate defending champion Boston Bruins

Joel Ward scored at 2:57 of overtime to give Washington Capitals a 2-1 victory over Boston in Game 7, sending the Capitals to Eastern Conference semifinals and ending the defending Stanley Cup champion Boston Bruins' hopes of a repeat.

The Capitals squeaked into the NHL playoffs as the #7 seed in the East this year but after struggling to make an impact in the playoffs in the last two seasons despite topping the regular season standings, this time the Caps seem to have saved their best performances for the playoffs.

It was the first time in NHL history that a playoff series had seven games determined by one goal. Four of the games went to overtime, and two others were decided with less than two minutes left in regulation.

The Boston stadium fell silent as the Capitals celebrated just their third postseason series win since a run to the Stanley Cup finals in 1998.

CHAMPIONS LEAGUE : Bayern Munich beat Real Madrid to reach final

German club Bayern Munich edged out Real Madrid on penalties at the Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday evening to qualify for the final of the 2012 UEFA Champions League Final on May 19th.

Real Madrid had edged Bayern Munich 2-1 on the night with all the goals coming in the first half, a result that was the reverse of Bayern Munich's 2-1 win in the first leg, leaving the score tied 3-3 on aggregate,

After 30 minutes of extra time failed to seperate the teams it was left to the penalty shootout to decide the tie and who claimed a place in the Champions League final.

The shootout was a dramatic way to decide the match with Real Madrid seeing their first two penalty kicks saved, before forcing a way back into the contest after Bayern Munich missed kicks three and four.

Then Real Madrid's Sergio Ramos failed to handle the big occasion, sending his penalty kick high over the crossbar, and Bayern Munich's Bastian Schweinsteiger scored his kick to send the German side through.

Bayern Munich will host the final at the Allianz Arena, the first club to do so in the modern Champions League era, and will face English club Chelsea who defeated Barcelona 3-2 on aggregate on Tuesday night.

RESULT : Real Madrid 2-1 Bayern Munich (agg. 3-3) Bayern win 3-1 on penalties.
Goals : Cristiano Ronaldo 6(p), 14, Arjan Robben 27.

A power-play goal by Scott Hartnell 13 minutes later and Erik Gustafsson's first goal of the postseason in the second period put Philadelphia in control 3-0 up, much to the delight of the orange-clad fans roaring them on in Philadelphia.
The Penguins got on the board when Evgeni Malkin scored a power-play goal as the Flyers' Danny Briere responded 34 seconds later with a shot from the side of the net that ricocheted past Penguins goalie Marc-Andre Fleury.

EPL : Manchester City close gap to Man Utd to 3 points

The forthcoming Manchester derby between City and United on April 30th has regained it's title importance again after Everton stunned Manchester United at Old Trafford coming back to draw 4-4.

Manchester City closed the gap to just three points on Sunday after they beat Wolves 2-0 as goals in each half at Molineux from Sergio Aguero and Samir Nasri sealed a routine victory, and condemed Wolves to relegation in the process.

Earlier in the day, Man United lost a two-goal lead in the final seven minutes as Everton salvaged a point when Nikica Jelavic and Steven Pienaar scored late to claim a share of the points.

Liverpool's league season continues to disappoint as former Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson took West Brom to Anfield and the Baggies snatched their first win at Anfield since 1967 with Peter Odemwingie scoring the only goal of the game.

FA CUP : Liverpool 2-1 Everton : Andy Carroll's late goal wins it

Andy Carroll's late header sent Liverpool through to the FA Cup final as they came from behind to beat Everton at Wembley.

Nikica Jelavic took advantage of a mix-up between Jamie Carragher and Daniel Agger to give Everton the lead midway through the first half and a halftime 1-0 lead.

But on the hour, Everton contrived to hand Liverpool an equaliser as Sylvain Distin's weak backpass was intercepted by Luis Suarez, who raced through and score.

Liverpool then missed a succession of chances, with Andy Carroll the main culprit, but CArroll redeemed himself with just 3 minutes remaining when he glanced substitute Craig Bellamy's free-kick past Howard to give Liverpool a 2-1 victory.

FOOTBALL : Reading beat Southampton 3-1 - Premier League beckons

Reading all but secured promotion to the Premier League with a 3-1 victory over their nearest rivals Southampton in an enthralling encounter at St Mary's.

Jason Roberts's header put Reading ahead with Rickie Lambert's deflected strike levelling before two goals from Adam Le Fondre sealed the win.

The win gives Reading a three-point lead over Southampton at the top of the Championship, and with three games to go, the Royals hold a nine-point advantage over third-placed West Ham, who have four to play.

It would take a monumental slip-up and some very unfortunate results elsewhere for Reading to miss out on automatic promotion now, while Southampton will battle with the Hammers for the second automatic place.
