FT - Arsenal 7-3 Newcastle United - Video Highlights

Arsenal and Newcastle United played out a crazy 10-goal match at the Emirates Stadium with the Gunners scoring 4 times in the last 15 minutes to run out 7-3 winners.

Theo Walcott swept Arsenal in front but Demba Ba equalised with a deflected free-kick.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain's low shot put Arsenal 2-1 ahead afgter 51 minutes, but Sylvain Marveaux tapped in soon afterwards to level, before Lukas Podolski nodded home for Arsenal to regain the lead.

Ba levelled again, only for Walcott to score twice more, either side of a brace from substitute Olivier Giroud.

Giroud hit the bar as Arsenal pushed for an eighth, but the result was secure and Arsenal extended their winning run to four games.

Here are 12 minutes of video highlights taken from an Arabic feed - and although I can't understand a word the comentator is saying I think that it's a definate improvement on ESPN's Tommy Smythe
;-)

Five young internationals sign new contracts with Arsenal

Arsenal Football Club announced that five of its young internationals have today signed new long-term contracts.

The quintet of Kieran Gibbs (23), Carl Jenkinson (20), Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (19), Aaron Ramsey (21) and Jack Wilshere (20), who are all full internationals, and between them have already made more than 350 first-team appearances for the Gunners, have all committed their long-term futures to Arsenal.

Midfielder Ramsey has played 24 times for Wales and has also captained the side while the other four players who have put pen to paper on new deals, are all full England internationals.

Defender Jenkinson is the most recent to win his first cap, making his full England debut in November in the friendly international in Sweden. Defender Gibbs was a regular under-21 international and has now won two England caps, with midfielder Wilshere representing the Three Lions on nine occasions.

Manager Arsène Wenger said: “We are delighted that these five young players have all signed new long-term contracts. The plan is to build a team around a strong basis of young players, in order to get them to develop their talent at the Club."

Corinthians beat Chelsea 1-0 to lift Club World Cup

BRAZILIAN club Corinthians have won the Club World Cup in Japan, overcoming European champions Chelsea 1-0 in an untidy match.

The match at the 68,000-capacity International Stadium in Yokohama was frenetic, with several chances at both ends, but much of the action was down to individual skills and defensive mistakes rather than flowing team play.

Striker Guerrero got the only goal of the game for Corinthians in the 69th minute heading in from close range - and the Sao Paulo club secured its second intercontinental title - it won the FIFA Club World Championship in 2000.

Chelsea's Fernando Torres missed the best chance to equalise when he shot straight at the goalkeeper from the edge of the six-yard box with only four minutes to go. Torres had the ball in the net in injury time, but it was ruled offside and Corinthians held on.

CONCACAF champion Monterrey of Mexico took third place by defeating Egypt's Al Ahly 2-0 through goals from Jesus Corona and Cesar Delgado.

College Football Bowl Season Kicks Off with Arizona-Nevada Clash

It’s the most wonderful time of year again, NCAA football bowl season, and college football’s finest are coming up with their best ways of striking it rich in the hardware department before programs retire for the offseason.

Kicking the festivities off are Nevada and Arizona in the Gildan New Mexico Bowl this Saturday.

Bet on college football at Bovada Sportsbook and get a free 50% Bonus.

Although the early sportsbook odds are heavily in Arizona’s favor (with a 9.5-point spread), the Nevada Wolf Pack generated enough momentum in the first half of the season to turn some heads. Whether they can capitalize on that, as opposed to the 1-4 finish they ended with, is what will determine how well balanced the matchup is come the weekend.

The Arizona Wildcats, in contrast, were more consistent playing in the Pac-12, and Arizona did manage to pick on the #9 ranked USC Trojans amid the Trojans infamous free fall. That win, along with another against #18 Oklahoma State and a 7-5 record overall, tilts the scales in Arizona’s favor heading into the matchup.

The Gildan New Mexico Bowl ushers in the beginning of a blissful month of NCAA line action.

Betfair pulls out of Germany over 5% gambling tax

The Betfair betting Exchange has withdrawn its online sports product from Germany, blaming a 5 percent turnover tax for making its main product unviable in Europe's largest economy.

Betfair released an announcement saying "The company is disappointed that to date the tax authorities have not been able to agree to an interpretation of the law that would allow Betfair to continue to offer the exchange product ... Consequently, Betfair has decided to withdraw its exchange product from the German market".

William Hill, Britain's largest bookmaker, said it no longer offered any kind of service to German residents because of the tax situation.

FOOTBALL : Arsenal beat Tottenham 5-2 again - video highlights

Emmanuel Adebayor made a nightmare return to the Emirates Stadium on Saturday, scoring and then being sent off as Arsenal cruised to a 5-2 win over Tottenham Hotspur in the north London derby.

Spurs opened the scoring, beating the Arsenal offside trap, for Emmanuel Adebayor to eventually score from the rebound after a good save by Szczesny. From hero to zero, Emmanuel Adebayor was then sent off for a late, high two-footed tackle.

Per Mertesacker atoned for his offside trap fail with a looping header to make it 1-1.

Lukas Podolski gave the Gunners the lead going into the half-time break. Olivier Giroud made it 3-1 right on half-time.

Santi Cazorla finished off a great move between Arsenal’s front 3 to make it 4-1. Gareth Bale pulled it back to 4-2 in the 71st minute.

Theo Walcott put the gloss back on the scoreline in injury time to make it 5-2 - to repeat last seasons North London derby scoreline for Arsenal.

FT : Chelsea 5-4 Manchester United - video highlights

OK - so there were "only" nine goals in this Captial One Cup tie - another cracker of a game as Chelsea beat Manchester United 5-4 in extra time.

Ryan Giggs Opened the scoring for ManYoo, and David Luiz equalised from the spot before Javier Hernandez put United 2-1 up at the halftime break.

Gary Cahill made it 2-2 but it appeared Nani's chipped finish would win it, before Eden Hazard scored in the 94th minute from another spot-kick to make it 3-3.

Daniel Sturridge and Ramires both scored for Chelsea in extra time before Giggs grabbed a late penalty in the last minute.

FT : Reading 5-7 Arsenal (AET) - Video highlights of all the goals!

Arsenal have stormed back from 0-4 down to beat Reading 7-5 after extra-time in a Capital One Cup tie.

Jason Roberts, a Laurent Koscielny own goal, Mikele Leigertwood and Noel Hunt put Reading 4-0 up after 35 minutes.

Theo Walcott found the net before the break, before Olivier Giroud and Koscielny scored with headers from corners, and Walcott grabbed an equaliser with the last kick of normal time.

Marouane Chamakh scored in extra-time before Pavel Pogrebnyak levelled, but Walcott and Chamakh had the final word.

Reading v Arsenal by dm_5090bf3966cbe

Arsenal had 32 shots (21 on target) while Reading also managed 17 shots in a game that started with goals and just went mental. WTF was this? A header tennis match? ;-)

FT : Arsenal 1-0 QPR - Video highlights

Mikel Arteta's late goal gave Arsenal a much-needed win over struggling QPR at the Emirates Stadium.

It was not a vintage Arsenal display against a hard-working QPR side, with Rangers goalkeeper Julio Cesar producing a series of good saves to keep Arsenal at bay.

The Gunners dominated with 66% possession and 22 shots to 6 but when Santi Cozorla blazed over the bar from 12 yards out with 15 minutes remaining it looked like it was gonig to be another frustrating day.

Arsenal finally went ahead via Arteta's scrambled effort with eight minutes left after QPR full-back Stephane Mbia had been sent off for kicking out at Gunners defender Thomas Vermaelen.

Here are some viudeo highlight's that I found on the net after the game.

Nevada sports book director arrested - how are PinnacleSports.com involved?

Online gambling forums have been buzzing in the last 24 hours after a Nevada Sportsbook director was arrested, and mention of top online sportsbook PinnacleSports.com has subsequently been made in reports.

Cantor Gaming sports book director Mike Colbert was arrested Wednesday in Las Vegas by state gaming agents in connection with a warrant filed by the district attorney in Queens County, N.Y.

Cantor Gaming has leased space in seven Las Vegas-area casinos - M Resort, Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas, The Venetian, Palazzo, Tropicana, Hard Rock and Palms - where it operates race and sports books -  but legal sources say that this arrest has nothing to do with Cantor Gaming's activities.

Instead, it appears that stories are circulating that law enforcement officials are trying to tie Colbert and seven other men arrested in Las Vegas on New York warrants as acting as agents for bookmaking activity associated with an operation dubbed "World Wide Wagers".
( SOURCE : Nevada Gaming Control Board Release )

Seven homes were searched, and accounts and safe deposit boxes frozen and seized. Approximately $2.8m in cash and chips has been nabbed by the Feds.

Now, major sports network ESPN are reporting that "the owners of Curacao-based Pinnaclesports.com, one of the most prominent sports betting websites, were named in the indictment."  ( ESPN source )

WTF? PinnacleSports are active in the United States? That doesn't ring true.

Online sports bettors will know the PinnacleSports stopped accepting US players on their website in January 2007, shortly after UIGEA was enacted, and in December 2008 stopped offering odds on US Horse races. Additionally, PinnacleSports.com closed their poker room in June 2011 over concerns about US poker players playing on the nework.

Furthermore, PinnacleSports.com has a significant list of countries that are excluded from playing including the United States, France, Spain, Turkey and the Netherlands - all potentially lucrative markets that were turned away by the company as different national gambling regulations were passed.

PinnacleSports seem to have tried hard to remain compliant with the various laws and regulatory issues around the globe.

So if PinnacleSports are not accepting wagers from United States based players directly, then what is this all about?

It appears that a third-party "Agent System" offered by PinnacleSports.com to dozens of agents around the world may be the cause. These agents use the system to take bets from players using PinnacleSports lines - but the betting and the money stays between the agents and the player.

Agents pay a fee to use the software and the bets taken have nothing to do with the company providing the software.

But if this system was being used to facilitate gambling from US players even remotely via proxies, phone calls to "robot" clients that enter the bets or any other means, then I could see a possible connection that is not legal according to current United States UIGEA laws.

What do PinnacleSports say?

Pinnacle released a statement asserting that ”No Pinnacle Sports employees have been arrested or charged, and Pinnacle Sports itself was not charged in the indictment. We expect no interruptions to our day to day business activities at this time.” ( Pinnacle statement at PokerNews.com )

What should bettors at PinnacleSports do with their accounts?

It's the first time that I've even heard a whisper about the Agent system being used in the United States - I was pretty sure that PinnacleSports had decided to get completely out of the US betting action.

With the details of the "Agent System" in mind - WHO REALLY KNOWS what the ramifications might be for Pinnacle in the long-term.

I think that any player who is worried about their Pinnacle funds should probably take action to reduce their balance. There is no harm in using your free monthly withdrawal to reduce your balance to a level you feel comfortable at.

Bring back 50%, 75% or even 100% of your bank at PinnacleSports if you are uncomfortable with the current situation - there is nothing wrong with being cautious and minimizing risk - that's part of being a good punter.

I have the word from a couple of players that they got paid out today via e-wallets and it only took 10-20 minutes ... so right now liquidity is still good.

NCAAF Betting – Are the Gators Primed to be Upset?

South Carolina Gamecocks (7) @ Florida Gators (2)
Saturday, October 20th, 2012 3:30PM EST

BetOnline.com

This weekend marks the beginning of the second half of the college football season, and the second half gets kicked off with a bang when South Carolina heads to Florida.

The college football betting fans are watching the Florida Gators and Oregon Ducks battling back and forth for the number two spot in the country and the likely matchup against Alabama in the BCS championship game. That means that every game in the second half of the season is critically important to the Florida Gators, which could cause problems if the Gators get upset by the Gamecocks.

Steve Spurrier has taken the South Carolina Gamecocks and turned it into a top 10 program. Just two years ago, no one would have bet that South Carolina would be in a position to challenge for the BCS title, but that is the opportunity that this game presents.

Considering the instability in the top five (with the exception of number one Alabama), this game could help the Gamecocks to leapfrog several teams and thrust itself into the national championship discussion. A win over the Gators would do wonders for the Gamecocks standing in the national rankings.

Florida Gators (6-0)

The online betting experts know that the Florida Gators are winning games primarily on defense with just 60 points conceded in 5 SEC conference games. The 14-6 masterpiece that the Gators put together against fourth ranked LSU in week five is the game that helped to thrust the Gators into the second ranked position in the country.

The dominating win 31-17 at Vanderbilt the following week was just icing on the cake. The weakness with the Gators is in its passing game with the Gaters ranked just 118th. The running game and the defense more than make up for a lackluster passing game, but that may not be enough to hold off the Gamecocks.

South Carolina Gamecocks (6-1)

The thing that separates South Carolina from Florida in the standings is that South Carolina lost its game to LSU last weekend 21-23, but the Gamecocks did keep the game close.

South Carolina qrguably has a better defense than Florida, and the Gamecocks have the potential to score more points than Florida. But Florida can be so dominating on defense that it is able to smother other teams.

The Gators are also proficient at scoring points on defense and the Gamecocks are not. But with all of that, the South Carolina Gamecocks are still in a good position to pull off the upset if it can avoid the mistakes that cost it the LSU game last week.

The Bottom Line

The sports betting sites are all over Florida (-3½ points) in this game, but that may not be the bet to make. The Gamecocks are getting the points, but South Carolina has a shot at winning this game straight-up.

This will be South Carolina’s last chance to get into the BCS National Championship discussion, and the Gamecocks are ready for the challenge.

Pick: South Carolina with 3½ points start

NFL : Green Bay beat Houston 42-24 - The Pack are back!

Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers finally put it all together by beating previously unbeaten Houston 42-24 on Sunday night.

Rodgers, the reigning MVP set a career high with six touchdown passes and the Packers played their best game of the season in dominating Houston. Rodgers completed 24 of 37 passes for 338 yards, 6TDs and no picks.

Jordy Nelson caught three touchdown passes and James Jones had two, including a diving one-handed catch in the 4th quarter for the Packers.

Tom Crabtree had the other TD, a 48-yard catch that Rodgers threw just before taking a hit from Texans' outside linebacker Brooks Reed.

The Packers sill have plenty to do - they're just 3-3 and site behind the Chicago Bears and Minnesota Vikings in the NFC North - but it was a very solid performance against the AFC's best with Houston leading the AFC South at 5-1, and it shows that Green bay have the weapons to beat any side.

The Pros and Cons of NHL Players Playing During the Lockout

As the battle between millionaire players and billionaire owners rages on in the NHL collective bargaining agreement talks, many fans have been noticing that many of their favorite players are opting to play overseas rather than sit things out and wait.

Since the previous collective bargaining agreement expired on September 15, the players have been free to sign with any team they want from any other league. This raises some interesting questions.

NHL players appearing in other leagues raises the interest in those leagues from hockey fans. ESPN has already capitalized on that interest by broadcasting games from the Russian KHL while the NHL is locked out.

ESPN has been largely ignoring the NHL since the 2005 lockout and having a competing league being broadcast on ESPN definitely does not help improve the NHL’s negotiating stance with NBC Sports and other television networks.

From a fan and team perspective, there are benefits and drawbacks to having the NHL players on teams overseas. The most obvious problem is the potential for injury. The last thing that the fans want to see is an NHL player’s career end because of an injury suffered during the lockout.

Another problem for NHL franchises that have players playing overseas is, with the raised public awareness of these other leagues, those league revenues will go up. The reason players come to North America to play in the NHL is money. If a league closer to home can offer decent money to a star player, then that player may decide to stay home and make a very comfortable living without having to deal with the aggravation that the NHL can sometimes create.

Despite the challenges, there are some perks to having NHL players play overseas. For one thing, the players get to play and stay in shape and the NHL does not have to pay them. In an NHL lockout, no one wins. The NHL has already lost an estimated $250 million because of the lockout. Any more losses will be catastrophic.

Another advantage to having the NHL players playing overseas is that they get game experience as opposed to just working out in a gym or skating in drills. It is a little easier for players to get their chemistry back with NHL teammates when they have already been playing in overseas leagues.

With ESPN chiming in and broadcasting KHL games, maybe the NHL owners will feel the pressure to get a deal done and get the international hockey spotlight focused back on the NHL.

St George's Park: A tour of England's new training base

Former Gooner and ex-England defender Martin Keown goes on a tour of St George's Park, the English FA's new national football centre at Burton.

Costing around £100m, the centre is a 330-acre site which includes a grass replica of the Wembley surface with exactly the same mix of grass and artificial fibres, a full-size indoor pitch, and 11 outdoor pitches as well as an altitude chamber to mimic a variety of playing conditions.

The FA is hoping St George's Park will provide the basis for England success at future international tournaments.

It certainly is an amazing facility.

Barcelona and Real Madrid battled to an entertaining 2-2 draw in the Nou Camp on Sunday evening.

Not surprisingly it was the two stars who dominated the game wth Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi both scoring two goals apiece.

Ronaldo scored midwat through the first half, but Messi equalised for Barce before halftime. In the second half Messi gave the home side the lead with a stunnign free-kick, before Ronaldo equalised with a clinical finish.

The final 15 minutes was end-to-end action, but neither side could grab a winner.

NFL : Paddy Power refund losing bets on Green Bay Packers

Top Irish bookmaker Paddy Power has decided to refund losing handicap (ATS) and match bets (ML) on the Green Bay Packers @ Seattle Seahawks game in one of their well known "Justice Payouts".

The problem was ultimately caused by the regular NFL referees going on strike over a pay dispute with team owners. This league were forced to call in back-up officials for the first three weeks of the season.

These "replacement referee" guys have been doing their best but it has been painfully clear many of them are out of their depth - with most of them having previously officiated in College Division II and III only.

Many poor calls have been made in the first three weeks but this is the worst one so far.

With seconds to go, Seattle were in possession but needed to cover a lot of ground in a very short time. Quarter-back Russell Wilson launched a Hail Mary pass in to the end zone and several players went for the catch. Green Bay’s MD Jennings came down in possession of the ball but Seattle’s Golden Tate was also clinging on to it for dear life. One referee gave a touchdown; the other didn’t.

So we went to a replay.

Not only does the replay show Jennings got full control of the ball first, which would have resulted in a turn-over and won the game for the Packers, it also shows Tate clearly shoving Green Bay’s Sam Shields in the back before making his jump.

Paddy Power determined it was a clear offensive foul and again should have been enough to nullify the touchdown and hand Green Bay the win.

Despite going to the replay, the touchdown was somehow allowed to stand - and thousands of punters everywhere found themselves out of pocket.

So Paddy Power has made the call to refund losing customer bets on the Green Bay Packers - a top guesture - and one that just underlines why they are one of Europe's top bookmakers ... are you betting at Paddy Power?

(Sorry no US customers accepted).

NFL : Seahawks win 14-12 on bad call - up to $1 billion lost by punters.

Monday night's controversial touchdown call on the last play of the game that gave the Seattle Seahawks a 14-12 victory over the Green Bay Packers had an impact of around $1 billion on gamblers.

The favoured Green Bay Packers were leading by 5 points, covering the spread, until the replacement refs called that Seahawks wide receiver Golden Tate had possession, giving the Seattle Seahawks victory and turning all moneyline (ML) and against-the-spread (ATS) bets to the underdog Seahawks.

Estimates suggested that the game result shifted $15 million in Nevada, and estimates of the online action range from $150 million up to $1 billon - with about 80% of it on the packers ..

VIDEO : Real Madrid 3-2 Manchester City

Cristiano Ronaldo's 90th-minute strike won an engrossing game as the nine-time champions Real Madrid scored twice in the last four minutes to snatch a 3-2 victory.

Despite dominating the opening 45 minutes, Real Madrid were stunned when substitute Edin Džeko put Manchester City ahead midway through the second period.

That brought the game to life, with Marcelo equalising with 14 minutes left, only for Aleksandar Kolarov to restore Man City's advantage in the 85th minute.

Karim Benzema quickly levelled matters again before Ronaldo provided the winning goal.

VIDEO : Arsenal beat Southampton 6-1

Arsenal hit their straps on Saturday afternoon - producing a slick passing performance and a lot of dangerous movement to beat Southampton 6-1 at the Emirates.

The scoreline was a little hard on Southampton who did have some moments in the game, but the Saints were far too hesitant in the first half and let Arsenal get into a lot of dangerous wide positions - with two such crossings creating "oggies" from deflections of retreating defenders.

Gervinho grabbed a couple of goals - his first Arsenal goals since December 2011 - but this was an overall team performance very much in the preferred style of Arsene Wenger.

Here is a five minute highlights video of the match that I found on the net - ENJOY :-)

USC Visits Rival Stanford In Headline NCAA matchup

The #2 ranked USC Trojans have a pair of wins under their belt, but will get their first taste of Pac-12 action this weekend against the #21 Stanford Cardinal.

USC may already be favorites on the NCAA futures with 3/1 odds of winning the National Championship, but if Week 2 taught us anything, it’s that college football odds are far from guaranteed.

Stanford might be at home - but USC are heavily favoured and are giving up -9 points in the spread. Can USC cover? Weigh in on the conference rivalry today.

FOOTBALL : Michael Owen transfer to Stoke City approved

The Premier League has ratified Michael Owen's move to Stoke City.

Michael Owen, who has played for Liverpool, Real Madrid, Manchester United, Newcastle United, and England, as was realeased at the end of last season agreed a one-year deal with Stoke City on Tuesday.

But Stoke required the Premier League's approval to include the 32 year old striker in their 25-man squad for the current season.

Following Wednesday's announcement, Owen wrote on Twitter: "It's official! Deal done. I'm a Stoke player. Can't wait to get going."

Owen has won 89 caps and scored 40 goals for his country, although he has not played internationally since 2008.

He spent the last three seasons at Manchester United but played in only 52 games, netting 17 times. He made just four club appearances last season.

FOOTBALL : Hulk signs for Zenit St Petersburg

Zenit St. Petersburg signed Brazilian striker Hulk to a five-year deal and paying a €40m transfer fee to FC Porto.

The 26-year-old Hulk joined Porto from Japanese side Tokyo Verdy and scored 54 goals in 103 league matches after signing in 2008.

Zenit also signed Alex Witsel, a 23-year-old midfielder from Benfica.

The deal reflects the increasing influence of corporate owner and sponsor Gazprom - a natural gas giant that seems to make the final decisions about player transfers

"We were trying to sign them before the Sept. 3 deadline for the Champions League so they can play for us in that competition as well as the Russian league," Zenit spokesman Dmitry Tsimmerman told Reuters.

Zenit was drawn into Group C of the UEFA Champions League along with AC Milan, Anderlecht and Malaga.

FOOTBALL : Cristiano Ronaldo "unhappy" at Real Madrid

Cristiano Ronaldo was scoring goals for fun again on Sunday for Real Madrid, bagging two goals in Real Madrid's 3-0 win over Granada - but all is not well in his life apparently.

Goal.com are reporting that Ronaldo did not celebrate because he is "not happy about a professional issue".

The Portuguese player was the driving force behind his side's first win of the new Liga season but his lack of emotion on the back of both goals was the main talking point after the game.

Ronaldo has always been a bit of a precious piece, and he looked decidedly annoyed to be alongside Andres Iniesta and Lionel Messi in midweek, especially to see Iniesta winning Uefa's Best Player in Europe award.

The Portuguese star pointedly mentioned that he had an issue with things at Real Madrid but deliberately did not elaborate why - leaving plenty of speculation as to why he's behaving like a spoiled little boy on the pitch.

It's too late to be aggitating a transfer move now with the window closed, so perhaps it's as simple as Ronaldo tryong to negoiate another pay rise, or perhaps he's tired of playing under Jose Mourinho's strait-jacket style of football.

Whatever the reason, you can be sure that the big spending sides of Manchester City, Chelsea and Paris Saint Germain will be watching how events unfold and whether things are resolved by January.

Despite the obvious past association, I cannot see Manchester United spending the estimated €100m price tag that Ronaldo would command. Can you?

FOOTBALL : Man City beat Chelsea 3-2 to lift Community Shield

Manchester City held off a late surge from 10-man Chelsea to lift the Community Shield with a 3-2 win at Villa Park.

Three goals in 12 minutes early in the second half from Yaya Toure, Carlos Tevez and Samir Nasri ensured the Premier League champions came from a goal down to lead 3-1 and eventually win the season's traditional curtain-raiser in a quality game.

Fernando Torres had given Chelsea the lead shortly before half-time only for Roberto Di Matteo's side to lose the initiative when Branislav Ivanovic was sent off for a rash tackle on Aleksandar Kolarov moments later.

Ryan Bertand gave Chelsea hope with 10 minutes remaining but City clung on to lift their second trophy of 2012.

COMMUNITY SHIELD FINAL SCORE :
Chelsea 2 (Torres 40, Bertrand 80)
Man City 3 (Toure Yaya 53, Tevez 59, Nasri 65)

OLYMPICS : Mexico shock Brazil to win football gold medal

Mexico stunned favourites Brazil 2-1 to win the men's Olympic football gold medal at Wembley Stadium.

Oribe Peralta opened the scoring for Mexico after just 32 seconds, scoring from the edge of the 18-yard box, and midway through the second half Fabian Marco hit the Brazil crossbar to come close before a completely unmarked Peralta headed his second goal from a free-kick with just 15 minutes left.

Brazil who were aiming to win the football gold medal for the first time, pulled a goal back through Hulk in injury-time, before Oscar headed wide when well positioned.

Julius Brink and Jonas Reckermann won by two sets to one, 23-21 16-21 16-14, but it took them five match points to settle the contest.

It meant there was no fairytale for Brazil's Emanuel Rego - the 39-year-old who won gold at Athens 2004 and bronze at Beijing 2008 and was competing in his fifth Olympic Games - and Alison Cerutti.

Latvia's Martins Plavins and Janis Smedins took bronze - their country's first medal of London 2012 - in a surprise 2-1 victory over Reinder Nummerdor and Richard Schuil of the Netherlands.

---

Americans Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh won gold in the all-American final of the women's Beach Volleyball at Horse Guards Parade.

The duo claimed their third consecutive Olympic Games title after they defeated number six seeds Jennifer Kessy and April Ross in straight sets.

SPACE : Paddy Power offers bets on Martian Life

As NASA's Curiosity Rover begins it’s trip on the Martian surface, Irish betting firm Paddy Power are taking bets on whether the $2.5-billion science probe will find conclusive evidence of past life on the Red Planet.

Paddy Power are offering short odds of 5/6 (1.83) that Curiosity will indeed be successful in finding evidence of past life on Mars before the end of 2020. However, proof of intelligent life being found is considered a far less likely 20/1 shot according to their odds.

FRIENDLY ROUND-UP : Chelsea, Villa, West Ham struggle to get pre-season started.

Chelsea's pre-season continued with a 3-1 defeat to Brighton.

Frank Lampard gave Chelsea the lead in the first half after he finished a Ramires cross before the hosts struck back after 36 minutes through Vicente.

An error from Raul Meireles let in Will Buckley and although Petr Cech saved his effort, Giles Barnes was on hand to put the south-coast side 2-1 up, before Andrew Crofts sealed the victory late in the second half as the Blues slipped to their third defeat of pre-season.

---
Championship side Nottingham Forest recorded a 3-1 win over Premier League club Aston Villa at the City Ground.

After a goalless first half, Lewis McGugan netted from the edge of the area after 71 minutes to put the home side in front before captain for the day Barry Bannan equalised for Villa with a free-kick two minutes later.

Marcus Tudgay was on target after 77 minutes to put Forest back in front before McGugan rounded off the scoring with five minutes left.

---
West Ham travelled to Ipswich and suffered another defeat, their 4th of the pre-season.

West Ham fell behind after 15 minutes when Michael Chopra netted from the spot for Ipswich Town. Summer signing from Nottingham Forest Luke Chambers put the hosts two goals up four minutes later with a header.

Matt Taylor pulled one back for the visitors after 73 minutes with a long range effort, but Jason Scotland sealed a 3-1 win for the Suffolk side seven minutes from time.

---
West Brom needed a late equaliser from Peter Odemwingie to salvage a 1-1 draw at Sheffield Wednesday.

The hosts took the lead through Nejc Pecnik after 34 minutes with a cross-cum-shot which looped over Ben Foster before the Nigerian international scored in the 88th minute.
---
Premier League newcomers Reading drew 2-2 at Bournemouth.

Adrian Mariappa headed home a Nicky Shorey free-kick before the Cherries equalised through Wes Thomas, who converted a Matt Tubbs cross.

Hal Robson-Kanu put the visitors in front from the penalty spot but Miles Addison rescued a draw for the home side.
---
Meanwhile the other Premier League new boys, Southampton, beat last season's top flight basement boys Wolves 2-0 at St Mary's.

Saints took a first half lead when Billy Sharp converted an Adam Lallana cross for his fourth goal of pre-season, before Jason Puncheon doubled the lead midway through the second half when he drove into the net from the edge of the area.

---
Sunderland followed up a 1-0 pre-season defeat to Hartlepool with a 0-2 loss against Helsingborg in Sweden.

After a goalless first half the hosts took the lead after Alfreo Finnbogason's strike hit the post then rebounded off goalkeeper Simon Mignolet and into the net.

The Helsignborg lead was doubled after 73 minutes when a low strike eight yards out by May Mahlangu went under the Belgian.

COMMUNITY SHIELD : Chelsea v Man City at Villa Park

The traditional opener to the English football season kicks off next Sunday at Villa Park with the big money clubs Manchester City taking on Chelsea in the FA Community Shield.

The traditional curtain raiser for the new English football season will take place in Birmingham as the Olympic football final is being played at Wembley Stadium on Saturday.

TRANSFER ACTION

Manchester City have been basking in the glow of their first Premier League title it seems, with no names coming in, and only Wayne Bridge and Owen Hargraves departing. The expected lead stories at Eastlands about Carlos Tevez, Mario Ballotelli and of course the potential capture of Robin Van Persie's signature have failed to occur.

Meanwhile, Chelsea have signed Eden Hazard (and his little brother), Marki Martin and Brazilian Oscar while releasing Jose Bosingawa, Salomon Kalu and seeing Didier Drogba leave on a free.

RECENT FORM

Pre-season form is a complete waste of time as both clubs have trapsed around the world playing exhibition matches using a wide variety of players with most of the international players involved in Euro2012 taking an extended break.

Both sides played friendly games on Saturday 4th of August, with Manchester City beating Wolfsburg 2-0 with goals from Sergio Aguero and Yaya Toure, while Chelsea were beaten 1-3 by Brighton - Frank Lampard getting Chelsea's goal.

Meanwhile a look at recent league matches between these two clubs shows that the results have been evenly split in the last two seasons, with both teams using home advantage to win their home fixtures.

2011-12 Head to Head Results
Manchester City 2-1 Chelsea
Chelsea 2-1 Manchester City

2010-11 Head to Head Results
Chelsea 2-0 Manchester City
Manchester City 1-0 Chelsea.

WHAT MIGHT HAPPEN ?
Chelsea were a little off the pace last season domestically, finishing 5th in the league with much of that put down to the inability of young manager Andre Villa-Boas to control a dressing room full of stars with big paypackets and even bigger egos.

The Blues did win the Champions League of course, with new manager Roberto Di Matteo coming in and creating a solid defensive platform that relied a lot on counter attacks and Didier Drogba upfont.

But it seemed to me that Manchester City looked at stronger side over the course of the season, and a when I look over the two squads, I feel that City have youth and talent in depth.

Those prices of 2.30+ for a Manchester City win in 90 minutes look good to me.

Best Betting Prices :
Chelsea to win at 3.28 at Pinnacle, 3.20 at BetVictor, and 3.10 at Bet365
Draw at 90 minutes at 3.50 at Pinnacle, and 3.40 at BetFred
Man City to win at 2.34 at Pinnacle, 2.30 at BetVictor, and 2.30 at Bet365

OLYMPICS : Spain knocked out of mens football after two games

Spain are out of the Olympic men's football competition after suffering a shock 1-0 defeat by Honduras.

Striker Jerry Bengtson scored for Honduras with a seventh-minute header and it was the only goal of the game - a result eliminated Spain, following an opening defeat by Group D leaders Japan.

The match became ill-tempered with 13 yellow cards shown, as Spain became increasingly desperate, with Iker Muniain hitting an upright, and substitute Rodrigo the crossbar amid a second-half Spanish onslaught.

But Honduras battled heroically to keep Spain's star-studded side at bay and earn an important win.
