Ivory Coast comfortably beat a defensively-frail North Korea 3-0 in Nelspruit but it was not enough to remain at the World Cup.
The Elephants needed to win and also make up a nine goal deficit on Portugal to have any hope and the goals never really looked likely to come.
Ivory Coast coach Sven-Goran Eriksson did score two first half goals through Yaya Toure and Romaric and Salamon Kalou came off the bench to add a third goal in the 82nd minute to complete the scoring.
However, it was Portugal who progressed in second spot thanks to a goalless draw with group winners Brazil.
