South Africa 1-1 Mexico

Mexico and hosts South Africa battled to an entertaining 1-1 draw to open the World Cup at Soccer City in Johannesburg.

In a charged atmosphere bordering in Johannesburg, Siphiwe Tshabalala grabbed a thunderous opening goal for South Africa threatened to provide the 19th World Cup with the fairytale beginning.

But with 11 minutes to go Rafael Marquez controlled Andres Guardado's cross at the back post and rifled past Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune to ensure the spoils were shared after a breathless opening to the tournament.

The Mexicans were the better team throughout, but could have lost the match in the 90th minute when Katlego Mphela shot against the post with keeper Oscar Perez beaten.
